SEE YOU IN THE SYMBIOCENE
See you in the Symbiocene was presented in the inaugural 2020 Bankstown Biennale- Symbiosis. The expanded textile work reimagines Bankstown’s topography as a material and multispecies assemblage comprising living and non-living materials that are being broken down, consumed and remade. The work invited visitors to care for non-human others, such as fungi – a subject often overlooked as worthy of consideration, despite the fact that fungal agents play vital roles in both human and non-human ecologies through repair and regeneration. Simple acts like ‘noticing’ and engaging in gestures of ‘speculative care’ can positively alter our relationship to more-than-human worlds in a time indexed by environmental catastrophe and mass species extinction.
