THE MATTER OF OBJECTS AND MATERIALITY

‘The Matter of Objects and Materiality’ was a group exhibition with Kath Fries and Kate Brown, curated by Rachael Kiang at Gallery Lane Cove, Sydney in March 2019. The forms, surfaces and liquids exhibited, are in various states of being made and unmade by a Tasmanian strain of Reishi mushroom mycelium (the white microscopic filaments of a mushroom similar to the roots of a tree and often hidden underground) as it grows in and through surplus textiles. These experimental and speculative forms are diagrams of possibility, they do not propose solutions but rather are open-ended and processual assemblages. This lively collaboration between the artist and fungi, the ability to affect and to be affected by each other’s actions and modes of being is significant in rethinking our relationship to materials as inert and disposable.

The exhibition catalogue and essay can be found here.
