THINKING THROUGH MAKING
The work Making with Others was shown as part of the group exhibition and panel discussion ‘Thinking through making – new strategies in design education and research’ as part of the Sydney Craft Week Program at UNSW Art & Design in October 2018. The work explores the emergent field of biomaterials for design applications to consider the affective dimensions of non-human materiality. Advanced capitalism has propagated large-scale textile waste as a significant environmental impact for generations to come. Biomaterials such as SCOBY, bioplastics and mushroom mycelium offer up potentially transformative and disruptive modes of manufacture, use and disposal. Making with Others takes a collaborative approach to designing textiles with non-human others in the hope of engaging a more inclusive ethics of ecological relations.
